Rate of Dementia Patients Being Hospitalized Expected to Soar

According to a report from Medline Plus, the rate of dementia patients being hospitalized is expected to soar. Dementia is a serious condition that can lead to disability. Social Security disability benefits may be available to those who are severely impaired.

In a new analysis, it has been discovered that by the year 2050, between 3 and 7 million people will be hospitalized each year as a result of dementia. Many of the researchers don’t believe that hospitalizing dementia patients is the best option.

Although many of these patients tend to develop infections, such as pneumonia, they may be treatable in a setting other than a hospital. Hospice care and nursing homes may be more appropriate.

At this time, nursing homes are better off turning those patients over to a hospital; however, if they received appropriate compensation from Medicare, they may be more inclined to take on that patient’s care.

Families should be informed of the options available and that a hospital isn’t always the best choice,
especially when it comes to providing care that offers comfort.
