For veterans who rely on
veterans disability, military pensions, compensation, and health care, it's vital to stay in tune with changes to programs and benefits, whether that issue is brought up from newly introduced legislation or a new policy change within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Mac McQuown, a retired Marine, understands this and is currently walking around the United States to raise awareness for veterans and
veteran issues. His trip will cover approximately 15,000 miles, and he will visit the capital in every state in the continental U.S. His first step was taken on Sept. 11, 2011 from Ground Zero, according to an article in the
Historic Annapolis Patch.
McQuown is not alone. The Veterans Miracle Network Operation Walk America is sponsoring the "Bald Man Walking Project." According to him, the purpose of his walk is to "bring awareness to all veterans as far back as World War II." More specifically, he is on this walk to raise awareness of
wounded veterans issues, according to the article.
McQuown anticipates his awareness walk will take him 5 years to complete, and at times his daughter plans on joining him. If his current schedule holds, he will rest two days every week.
