November 5, 2010 - There is a recent trend of using outdoor activities to help veterans take some time off from the stress that usually accompanies re-entering the civilian world following military service. Many veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and it has been discovered that when veterans suffering from PTSD are taken into more calming environments and given the opportunity to relax, many of their PTSD symptoms seem to subside-at least temporarily.
To help facilitate this transition, the Recreational Outreach Project for Veterans in Maryland take veterans into Maryland's lands and waters, including Chesapeake Bay.
The program is currently focusing on chartering fishing expeditions. Over the fall season, approximately 35 expeditions will head out, hopefully helping veterans by the boatful. In addition to helping veterans, this programs also benefits the local charter boat industry. As the program grows, so will the expeditions offered. Eventually it will grow to include activities in Maryland's state parks.
The program was designed to help veterans reintegrate into society following their return from combat deployments. In addition to giving veterans the opportunity to explore Maryland's natural resources, the program also offers other advantages. The "Warrior to Worker" program helps veterans with:
Offering recreational services such as what Maryland is doing not only works as a thank you, but provides opportunities to many veterans they would not otherwise have. Everyone involved in the program is benefiting in some way.
