For 32 years, The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has presented an annual sporting event to give
disabled veterans in wheelchairs the chance to show off their amazing athletic skills.
The
National Veterans Wheelchair Games will be held June 25-30, 2012 at the site where the first games took place – Richmond, VA. The games are open to any disabled veteran who uses a wheelchair for sports. The
events include:
- swimming;
- basketball;
- table tennis;
- archery;
- air-guns;
- bowling;
- handcycling;
- power soccer;
- softball;
- track;
- weightlifting;
- field sports;
- motorized rally
- 9-ball;
- quad rugby;
- motorized slalom; and
- trap shooting.
Disabled veterans interested in participating in the games can visit the VA’s website for the registration packet and forms. Aside from the veterans’ events,
June 29 is “Kids Day at the Games” where local children with disabilities can come and interact with the athletes, participate in their own sporting events, and watch the games.
A severe injury such as head trauma, spinal cord injury, or neurological damage can cause loss of use of limbs or paralysis – but that doesn’t mean a veteran has to give up everyday activities. Many disabled veterans have developed great sport skills around their disabilities and become amazing athletes with the help of
VA medical centers and therapy programs.
If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help. To learn if you are entitled to certain programs and benefits
