Research Reveals New Findings About Those With Visual Impairments

The brain goes through a complicated set of neural reactions that link motor control and visual information. Researchers have found that the visually impaired manipulate tools in the same area of the brain as those who can see. This discovery indicates that the brain is able to adapt to a range of conditions, including the inability to see.

Researchers used MRIs to reveal which parts of the brain are active when volunteers for the study heard certain words. Some of the words were from categories like "tools" or "animals." Other words were things you don't necessarily manipulate, such as "table" or "fence."

This study revealed that those who were visually impaired, even those who had been visually impaired from birth, would think about the word using the same part of the brain as a sighted person. A non-tool word didn't cause a reaction in the same region of the brain, whether the person could see or not.

This indicates that the brain is less dependent on experience than originally thought.
