In a report from the Doctor's Lounge, researchers have discovered genetic differences in stomach tumors. Cancer that has become disabling may lead to functional limitations and an inability to work. The diagnosis of any type of cancer could lead to the need for Social Security disability benefits.
Scientists analyzed 37 stomach cancer cell lines and were able to find 2 different subtypes of the cancer cells that also responded differently to the traditional treatment of chemotherapy. They found that one type responded better to chemotherapy than the other.
With this discovery, there is the potential of determining the most effective treatment plan for those with stomach tumors. The next step for researchers is to conduct further research into how the different stomach tumors may respond to various types of treatment.
The findings of this study were published in the August 1st edition of Gastroenterology.
