Researchers May Be Zeroing in on Cause of Multiple Sclerosis

Social Security disability benefits may be available to those individuals who meet criteria under the Social Security Administration's listing of impairments. Disability benefits can help cover income that is no longer available when a medical condition results in an individual becoming disabled.

The Doctor's Lounge reports that a brain chemical deficiency has been linked to multiple sclerosis. Researchers have found that a decline in levels of noradrenaline may be the result of damage in a particular area of the brain.

Patients who have multiple sclerosis have been found to have lower levels of noradrenaline, which is a vital neurotransmitter in the brain. The neurons that are located in this part of the patient's brain are responsible for preventing inflammation and stress to the neurons.

Damage to this area of the brain, which is known as the locus coeruleus (LC) has been shown in patients who also suffer from Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. This is the first time that researchers have discovered the same in patients who have multiple sclerosis.

These findings indicate that damage to the LC area and lowered levels of noradrenaline may be linked to other neurological diseases. Researchers plan to look at Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs that can help raise levels of noradrenaline.
