Researchers: No Direct Connection Between Mental Illness & Violence

Mental illness can be a debilitating condition that prevents an individual from being able to work or even participate in their typical daily activities. Social Security disability benefits can help those who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness and are unable to work because of their recognized condition.

There is a common stigma associated with mental illness, that those who suffer from such a condition are more prone to violence. Scientists, meanwhile, have taken a closer look at this stereotype while studying the link between violence and those with mental illness.

They have discovered that individuals who suffer from mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, are no more likely to become violent. However, they did discover that they may be more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs.

The connection to violence doesn't seem to be in the mental illness itself but rather, in the substance abuse. The rate of crime is similar to those who are not mentally ill but do have a problem with substance abuse.

Some studies have shown that individuals with bipolar disorder have a 20% chance of dealing with a substance abuse problem compared to just 2% in the general population. Those with schizophrenia have a 25% chance of dealing with substance abuse.

If you suffer from a severe mental illness, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and you are unable to work because of your condition, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. You should contact a Social Security disability lawyer who can help determine eligibility.
