September 9, 2010 - Soldiers placed on stop loss may be entitled to recover special pay for the time they spent being held past their separation date. The date to file a claim for the special pay is quickly approaching. There are surprisingly few soldiers and veterans who have applied for the special pay to date.
The Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay (RSLSP) was established by the 2009 War Supplemental Appropriations Act and has been in existence for almost a year. The RSLSP pays veterans $500 for every month or even partial month they were placed on stop loss past their date of separation. The average amount of special pay received is $3700.
Military service involuntarily extended between 11Sep2001 and 30Sep2009 qualifies for the special pay for all:
In order to claim the Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay, all claims must be submitted by October 21, 2010. Every branch of the military has spent the last year attempting to put out notice to all qualifying personnel using direct mail, various media mediums, and veteran service organization.
There is no reason this money should go unclaimed, it is money earned through service to this country. Applications may take up to a month to process, so the earlier the claim is filed, the earlier the money is received.
Soldiers can return home with a number of conditions, injuries, and aggravated preexisting conditions. If you believe you have a service-connected physical or psychological injury you may be entitled to Veterans’ Disability Compensation.
At LaVan and Neidenberg, we are determined to secure veterans their rightful disability compensation and disability rating. We wrote this book for you! In it you will find valuable tips on how to navigate the claims process and avoid common pitfalls. Request your FREE copy today!
