Ride 2 Recovery sponsors bicycle rides all over the country in order to raise money to purchase specialized bicycles, which have been modified for injured veterans to use as a part of their recovery process. This year, they are hosting a 9/11 anniversary ride that will start at Ground Zero in New York City. The ride will span 530 miles over 8 days, and finish at the Pentagon.
The 380 participating riders will make stops at historic military landmarks such as Gettysburg and Valley Forge. They will also visit Shansville, PA; Flight 93's crash site. The average daily ride will cover 58 miles, and their longest single stretch will cover 95 miles, all to raise money to aid
veterans disability.
Each rider must personally raise $2,998 to join the ride. This is $1 for every 9/11 victim. The Fitness Challenge Foundation produces Rise 2 Recovery and partners with the Military and VA Volunteer Service Office with the goal of helping injured veterans through their rehabilitation process. Many of the bicycles purchased with the raised money are adapted for amputee veterans.
Many veterans incorporate cycling into their recovery program. Aside from being physically beneficial, using cycling to rehabilitate has become more popular because it is one activity in which veterans with both physical and mental disabilities can partake.
More than 1,200 injured veterans have ridden in Ride 2 Recovery events since its founding in 2008. In addition to purchasing the modified recovery bicycles, the organization has donated more than 200 spin bikes to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical clinics and hospitals across the nation.
