In a report from
Health Day,
middle aged adults with an increase in their resting heart rate may indicate an increased risk of death from heart disease. Heart problems could lead to an individual being unable to work and in need of
Social Security disability benefits.
New research finds that
individuals whose heart rates have risen to more than 85 beats per minute, compared to fewer than 70 beats per minute in a 10-year period, had a greater risk of death from heart disease by 90%. This is in comparison to individuals whose heart rates remained steady at about 70 beats per minute.
An individual’s resting heart rate could be an indicator of not only their risk for developing heart disease but dying from it as well. Experts also point out that checking one’s resting heart rate is something that can easily be done at home.
An additional surprise finding suggests that those
individuals with resting heart rates above 85, who were able to lower it over time, didn’t see any benefits. It was only those who had resting
heart rates between 70 and 85 beats per minute could reduce their risk of death when they lowered their heart rates.
