Risk of Bleeding from Blood Thinner Medication and SSRI Antidepresssants

According to Medline Plus, the risk of bleeding is increased with blood thinner medication and antidepressants combined. If you are suffering from a severe mental or physical condition, then you could be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits.

A new study finds that patients who take antiplatelet drugs (Plavix, aspirin, etc.), after suffering a heart attack, along with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.), increase the risk of bleeding.

Those who take antidepressants and aspirin increase their risk of bleeding by 42%; however, those who take antidepressants, aspirin and a type of antiplatelet therapy increase the risk by as much as 57%.

Antiplatelet drugs help prevent blood clots and reduce the chance of an individual suffering another heart attack but many of these patients also suffer from depression and find it necessary to take medication to combat it, yet the risk of combining these medicines could be dangerous.

Bleeding was specifically found to include hemorrhagic stroke, gastrointestinal bleeding and other types of bleeding that require hospitalization. The study also found the risk of bleeding was less for women and those who had angioplasty after a heart attack.

Doctors are urged to be cautious about prescribing combinations of these drugs.
