Risk of Death in Leukemia Patients Increased with Highly Active Genes

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, approximately 12,330 people in the United States will be diagnosed this year with acute myelogenous leukemia. This cancer begins in an individual's bone marrow and interferes with the growth of normal blood cells.

New research shows that the risk of death in patients with acute myeloid leukemia is increased with highly active leukemic stem cells (LSC). This makes responding to therapies and treatment much more difficult.

The research indicated that there was a 78% risk of death within a period of 3 years for those who had higher gene activity levels. Additionally, there was an 81% risk of experiencing a setback from the cancer with the same high activity levels.

This discovery may help researchers to develop better strategies for treatment in patients who are identified with these highly active genes. These findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dec. 22/29 issues.
