Risk of Death Increased with Heart Disease and Belly Fat

If you suffer from a serious cardiovascular disease and treatment will require extensive missed time from work, you may be able to receive long-term disability benefits.

In a report from the Doctor's Lounge, the risk of death is increased for those individuals who have heart disease and belly fat.

This study also found that even if an individual is at a healthy weight, those who have belly fat could still be at risk. Belly fat can be developed for reasons other than weight gain. Smoking and high cholesterol can also lead to this, with the risk of death being the greatest for men.

This sheds new light on using BMI to indicate an individual's measure of body fat. The lead author of this new study, Dr. Thais Coutinho, indicates that BMI cannot tell how fat is distributed throughout the body. Therefore, the BMI may not be as important as where the fat is located.

This study was recently published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, May 10 issue.

After receiving a serious medical diagnosis and a treatment plan, you may have concerns about your finances. Consulting with a Plantation long-term disability attorney can help determine if you qualify to receive long-term disability benefits.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve. When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you to cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S!
