In a report from
Health Day, the
risk of diabetes is increased with statin medication use, such as Lipitor, Lescol, and Mevacor, in postmenopausal women. If a heart condition or any severe condition causes you to miss time from work while undergoing treatment and recovery,
you may be eligible to receive long-term disability benefits.
A new, large study finds that
women who have gone through menopause have about a 48% chance of developing diabetes when they are taking statins. This is similar to previous studies which have shown an increased risk in men and women who take drugs to lower cholesterol.
This risk remained even after making adjustments for risk factors including body mass index (BMI), level of physical activity, and family history of diabetes; however, the
study was not able to find a cause and effect.
Despite these findings,
researchers do not advise patients to stop taking statins. Instead, they should consult with their doctors about preventing, detecting, and treating diabetes.
