Runner Raises Money For Wounded Warriors

Drew Miller wanted to raise not only money for, but awareness of, the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). The WWP focuses on helping soldiers recover and transition back into their civilian lives following their tour of service and newfound veterans disability.

Miller decided 2 years ago he was going to run across the country, from Long Beach, California to his hometown of Spencer, West Virginia. The problem at the time, however, was Miller was 80 pounds heavier than he is now and in no shape to make the run. At the time, he was only running "a couple of miles every once in a while."

Despite his friends calling him crazy, Miller forged ahead with his plans. The trip was called the "Long Road Home" to ensure it had both significance and meaning for injured soldiers. The reference is made to the long road of physical and mental recovery wounded soldiers face upon their return. Through his efforts, he was able to raise more than $11,000 for the WWP.

Miller started his training in December of 2010 with 16 miles every day and cardio. His starting weight was 262 pounds, and before his run he dropped to 182 pounds. His route across the nation covered 8 states and took about 150 days to complete.

He took the first step of his journey on April 1 in California. He started by running 20 miles a day for 4 days and then would rest for a day. Nights would be spent sleeping in a van driven by his crew in parking lots. Along the way, Miller was helped out by the generosity of many strangers. If not for them, Miller believes he would have never completed his goal.
