Semitrailer Crashes into Panther

The Florida Highway Patrol report that the driver of semitrailer truck was not injured when he hit a Florida panther, killing the animal.

James Bettis, 49, was driving along in Fort Myers, Florida early in the morning when the panther ran across the highway. Bettis told officials he tried to swerve out of the way but the trailer's rear tires ran over the endangered animal, which died on the scene. Panthers are considered a protected animal in Florida and were placed on the endangered species list in 1967. Since the 1980s, officials have collared panthers to track their population.
