The Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee recently heard testimony regarding the VA's claims process from representatives from the Pentagon, Department of Veterans Affairs, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), and the Disabled American Veterans.
The GAO's review of the processing of veterans' disability claims gave rise to the hearing. The GAO has released its preliminary findings that identify setbacks in the resolution of veterans' benefits cases. Though the number of claims processed between 2003 and 2008 increased, so too did the time it took to resolve appeals.
The GAO's report noted that 15 resource centers have been opened to distribute claims and appeals for processing however, it is not yet known whether the centers will be effective in increasing the "timeliness and consistency of [the] VA's decisions."
