Senator Frustrated with SSA's Disability Waiting Period

The average waiting period for a disabled individual applying for Social Security disability benefits is more than 1 year.

KFYR-TV reports that a North Dakota senator has raised concerns about why the wait has not been reduced, in spite of assistance to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-ND, is frustrated that the average waiting period has not decreased, despite roughly $2.5 billion in additional funds given to the agency since 2006. The money was supposed to be used to reduce wait times, which has not happened to satisfaction.

Though the waiting periods have been reduced in small part, the improvement is far below what politicians expected after such a funding increase. Currently, the national average wait period for disability benefits is 491 days.

North Dakota's average wait is 453 days, so while it is better than the national average, it is still unreasonable. For instance, in January, there were more than 2,800 cases waiting to be reviewed in the Fargo, N.D. office. These prohibitively long wait times need to be addressed, if we have any hope of getting disabled individuals the financial assistance that they so desperately need.
