November 12, 2010 - More and more Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals and medical centers are being retrofitted with solar panels for various uses. Earlier this year, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki gave a deadline in which the VA must recover a certain percentage of their energy from renewable energy sources. The Mare Island VA health clinic is just one of the multiple VA medical centers that have already started on their path of meeting Sec. Shinseki's goal by installing solar carports.
More than just saving money on energy, VA officials believe the lowered costs that come with the solar panels will lead to the VA being able to provide better health care. The construction of the solar carports has been underway for just over a month. When it is completed, the panels will not only provide electricity, they will also provide something just as valuable in California: summer shade.
The investment of $1.3 million that is needed to make the solar carport happen should end up saving over that amount of money in the future. It is expected the panels will lead to approximately $50,000 in savings every year. The VA has given $20 million this year for solar energy system installations at 18 VA medical centers. There are 31 other sites being studied for solar feasibility.
Not only is the project a money saver, it will decrease the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by 180 tons every year. These panels alone will give the medical center approximately 25% of their total electrical needs. Sec. Shinseki sees solar power as "the future of our department." Once the Mare Island project is completed in January, they will be taking their first step into the VA's future.
