Side Effects from Breast Cancer Treatment Causing Men to Stop Taking It

According to the American Cancer Society, side effects from breast cancer treatment cause many men to stop taking it. A study from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center found that 20% of male patients with breast cancer stopped taking Tamoxifen due to the side effects. Medical records of 64 men, who were taking this drug between the years 1999 and 2009, were analyzed. Of them, 34 developed at least 1 side effect. This resulted in 13 of the patients stopping treatment.

Side effects that were experienced with tamoxifen and resulted in the men stopping the drug included: 

• blood clots;
• loss of sex drive;
• bone pain;
• memory/thinking difficulties;
• vision problems; and
• leg cramps.

Of those 13 men who stopped treatment, 8 died as a result of their breast cancer. While breast cancer in men is rare, they should still be aware of the symptoms such as discharge from the nipples, lump, or swelling.
