Side Effects of Treating Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder that has no known cure. This chronic condition many times leads to severe disability. Social Security disability benefits can help sufferers of Parkinson's disease who are no longer able to work.

Some of the standard treatments for Parkinson's disease may result in the rare side effect of risky behavior.
This risky behavior is defined as "impulsive-compulsive spectrum behaviors" (ICBs) and affects about 5 to 10% of those diagnosed with Parkinson's.

Until recently, the medical community did not have a clear understanding as to what triggered this risky behavior. The most common way of dealing with this has been to reduce the dosage of medication that a patient receives. However that only increases the physical symptoms, such as tremors, that many patients deal with.

It is now believed that treating the impulsivity of the patients might be a better solution. Medications that are used to treat other types of impulsive disorders may be beneficial to patients with Parkinson's. This could possibly help reduce the risky behaviors, along with the physical symptoms.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease or another severe mental or physical disability, you may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a Social Security disability lawyer who can help you determine eligibility.
