According to a report from the
American Heart Association (AHA),
significant, rapid memory loss is linked to stroke-related deaths. When a medical condition becomes severe and leads to time off from work, you could qualify to receive
long-term disability benefits.
Compared to individuals who have never had a stroke or didn’t die from one, those who did suffer fatal injuries as a result were found to have significant memory loss in the years prior.
This may help identify patients who are at a greater risk of death after a stroke.
The findings were surprising to researchers from the Harvard University School of Public Health in Boston, Mass., who conducted the study.
Using a standardized assessment, it was found that participant’s scores on memory dropped every year.
Those who were involved in the study and had never suffered a stroke, experienced a drop of 0.078 points. Those who did have a stroke but survived experienced a drop of 0.137 points. And
those who died from a stroke had experienced a drop of 0.205 points.
Researchers believe that
underlying diseases may be the culprit or memory impairment itself can increase the risk of death. Further studies to better understand the causes may be necessary.
