Significant Weight Gain Linked to Breast Cancer Recurrence and Death

If you have been diagnosed with a medical condition that will require you to miss time from work for a prolonged period of time you may be entitled to receive long-term disability benefits.

In a report from the Doctor's Lounge, researchers have found that significant weight gain is linked to breast cancer recurrence and death. The risk is increased with a weight gain of 10% or greater than the patient's original weight before the diagnosis of breast cancer.

On the other hand, researchers find that a moderate amount of weight gain has no effect on the recurrence of breast cancer or cancer-related death.

Those women who were analyzed in the study were found to be 14% more likely to develop a recurrence in comparison to those women who maintained their weight. However, the women who gained a significant amount of weight were found to be 25% more likely to develop a recurrence or experience cancer-related death.

Although the researchers indicate that most women don't gain a large amount of weight after the diagnosis of breast cancer, these results do show the potential dangers.

At this point, there is no clear understanding as to why the link exists, so further research will be conducted.

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and plan on filing for disability benefits, you should first consult with a Ft. Lauderdale long-term disability attorney.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve. When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you to cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S!
