Signs of Dementia May be Hidden at Your Workplace

According to a report from AJC, some people in the workforce are hiding signs of dementia. Dementia can lead to more debilitating symptoms, resulting in some individuals needing Social Security disability benefits if they're no longer able to work.

With people in the U.S. aging and working longer, doctors are seeing more and more cases of dementia. Early-onset Alzheimer's is yet another concern that may affect those who are still working.

Oftentimes employees try to hide their symptoms for fear of losing their jobs; however, they may be able to continue working productively, so medical experts would like to see more awareness raised and efforts being made to help employers deal with this.

The Alzheimer's Association indicates that approximately 5.4 million people suffer from the degenerative disease, which decreases cognitive abilities. Of those who have dementia, about 500,000 of them are under the age of 65.

There's the possibility that some employers could make reasonable accommodations for an employee who has symptoms of dementia, such as changing their duties or providing more flexible hours; however, not every employer is willing to do this.

The other option is for an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits.
With early-onset Alzheimer's being added last year to the compassionate allowances fast-track program, benefits may be received earlier.

If you have questions concerning your eligibility for disability benefits, you should speak to a Plantation Social Security disability lawyer as soon as possible.
