In a report from
Medline Plus, sleep apnea treatment may help improve symptoms of metabolic syndrome. If a severe health condition causes you to be unable to work for an extended period of time,
long-term disability benefits may be available.
Metabolic syndrome is the name given to a group of risk factors which increases the chance of developing certain health problems, such as heart disease. Some of the
symptoms include elevated levels of blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure.
New research finds that sleep apnea treatment,
continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), improved those elevated levels. Of the patients participating in the study,
13% had such success that they were found to no longer have metabolic syndrome after just 3 months of treatment.
CPAP is done by having the patient wear a face mask while they are sleeping.
Air is continuously delivered into their airway so that it stays open.
Researchers indicate that those with sleep apnea should be tested for metabolic syndrome, as many of them have it. In addition,
efforts should be made to improve health such as losing weight and become more active.
