Smartphone and IPad Access May Lead To VA Mobile App Store

Roger Baker is the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) who has been planning a way to create a Wi-Fi network specifically designed around the VA. An article in Nextgov detailed how Baker eventually wants to develop an "in-house application store for mobile computing." Earlier this year, Baker announced the VA would allow limited use of iPads and tablets on the VA network. The access has been opened this October to those who applied and are in need of it.

The initiative will see users slowly process out of using laptops and BlackBerry phones. Both the tablets and the iPads will use the same operating system, although it has not been explained in detail yet. Veterans with disabilities who apply will be given an encrypted email, and a mobile viewer for the VA's VistA Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).

The mobile app store Baker is envisioning would "aid the entire VA enterprise." Something Baker really wants to see are tablet and phone applications being developed from the VA's open source electronic health record (EHR) software. Field agents for the Veterans Benefits Administration would greatly benefit from an app allowing them to access "specific case files while in the field."
