Smoking Found to Be Linked to Bladder Cancer

In a report from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), smoking is found to be linked to a higher risk of bladder cancer. Cancer can lead to long-term treatment and an inability to work for several months. If your disability lasts beyond 52 weeks, then you could be entitled to receive long-term disability benefits.

Although the risk of bladder cancer for smokers was previously reported, a new study finds it to be an even higher risk than thought. Additionally, women are just as much at risk as men are.

Previously, studies showed that women who smoke had a 20% to 30% increased risk of bladder cancer. New data now suggests that the risk is almost 50%. This is similar to what was found in earlier studies with men who smoke.

Despite the fact that the risk is pretty even between men and women, men are still 4 more times more likely to end up with a diagnosis of bladder cancer. Researchers indicate that occupational exposure could be the cause for this, or possibly the physiological differences that exist between men and women.

The NIH reports that in 2011, we can expect approximately 69,250 people in the United States to be diagnosed with bladder cancer and nearly 15,000 to die from it.

When cancer or any other severe health condition prevents you from working, you should contact a Palm Beach County long-term disability attorney to discuss eligibility for disability benefits.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.

When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you to cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S! Contact a South Florida disability attorney today - 1-888-234-5758.
