In a report from the
Doctor’s Lounge, smoking may be linked to skin cancer in women. With the diagnosis of cancer, often comes an inability to work for sometimes months at a time. You may qualify for
long-term disability benefits during your treatment and recovery.
A new study has found that
women who smoke have an increased chance of developing squamous cell skin cancer. Additionally, women who have
smoked longer than 20 years were 2 times as likely to develop this same cancer.
While squamous cell skin cancer is not as aggressive as melanoma, it can still lead to the need for treatment. Cancer treatment can cause additional complications.
Although this study showed some risk in men who smoke developing the same type of cancer, it wasn’t as significant as found in women. At this point, researchers are not sure why this is.
It could be related to genetic factors, the amount of exposure men and women have to the sun or the use of sunscreen.
