Social Security Administration Reporting Requirements

If you currently receive Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, be aware that many life changes may affect the amount of money you will get. Even if you think the change is minor, you should let the Social Security Administration know as soon as possible. Failure to do so could result in your SSA disability payments being taken away, or in some cases, the SSA requesting that you pay back some benefits.

One example is if you move from a house to a nursing home, hospital, or assisted living facility. No matter where you move, it is likely that your SSI payments will change in some way. You will likely either be eligible for less money or no benefits at all if you no longer have a house to pay for. To find out for sure, you can contact a lawyer.

Other circumstances that change might affect your payment, as well. If any of the following apply, you will need to contact the SSA within ten days to avoid running into problems:

  • Change in income
  • Adjustment of living arrangement
  • Change in address

It might seem extreme, but even an unreported change of address or new roommate could put SSI payments in jeopardy. The best way to avoid penalties, such as having to pay back money, is to report the change to the SSA by phone or in-person. Additionally, neglecting to inform the SSA of a recent move could delay your check, which is typically an undesirable result.

If you are not sure if your lifestyle change is worth reporting to the SSA, speaking to a lawyer well-versed in Social Security law could be helpful. The Social Security Administration is experiencing enough delays right now, and forgetting to report major and minor changes alike will just to add them.

If you, or your loved, are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
