Social Security Eligibility and Age

It is never too early to learn about your options when it comes to Social Security.
Whether you are young and considering how you will get by when you are older, or recently disabled and want to know what is available, looking at the statistics is advised. According to IndyStar.com, there are some interesting averages out there, showing that you might be affected by Social Security at any age.

Even when you are young, you should be informed about the process. If you have the unfortunate circumstance of being disabled but barred from receiving Supplemental Security Income because your parents make too much money to qualify, you can apply for it on your own once you reach age 18. At that same age, if your parents are disabled, deceased, or retired and you have been receiving student benefits, they will stop because you are now considered to be on your own.

The next most exciting years when it comes to Social Security are usually at age 50 and up,
since that is the first age at which disabled widows and widowers are allowed to get their reduced payments. If you are not disabled but still a widow or widower, you can get reduced benefits at age 60. Everyone else must wait until they reach 62 to start getting their retirement benefits, though they will be reduced, as well.

Starting at age 65, you may qualify to get Medicare, and even if you are not disabled, you might be able to get Supplemental Security Income. Depending on your year of birth, your actual retirement age is between 65 and 67, so you will start receiving your full benefits if you retire at this time. However, according to statistics, most people opt to start receiving payments at about age 63.

No matter what age you are, you might have questions about SSI, disability payments, or Social Security in general. You do not have to wait until you are in dire need of payments to ask these questions. Instead, contact a lawyer as soon as possible to find out how you can ensure that you will get the benefits you deserve.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility. The process of securing Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone!
