April 1, 2011 - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Innovation Initiative recently awarded an $8 million grant to the non-profit Soldier On, which partners with both the VA and various other agencies to make housing and support available to veterans. They will use the grant to build somewhere between 45 and 75 new housing units, which will cover 9 acres of land. These units will be made available to veterans who are at least 55-years-old.
The number of units Soldier On will ultimately construct will be determined by the price to build. Finished units will consist of both studio and 1-bedroom apartments. A limited equity program is enacted for those veterans who move into the housing units that will provide them with ownership of their own housing unit. Veterans moving in would buy the unit and if they move, they would be able to recover some of that money. This ownership aspect serves as a great incentive and attraction to many eligible veterans.
One great motivator for many veterans is being given the ability to live among other veterans in a place of their own. Additionally, all veterans who move into the new housing facility will still receive the same services all residents of the Soldier On community receive.
Soldier On previously built a very similar facility with which they had great success. This project will not be completed for some time as Soldier On will likely not break ground for 6-8 months.
Soldiers can return home with a number of conditions, injuries, and aggravated preexisting conditions. If you believe you have a service-connected physical or psychological injury you may be entitled to Veterans’ Disability Compensation.
