According to MSN Health, a new study shows that not all hospitals are successful at finding heart blockages. Heart blockages can be a result of serious cardiovascular problems, which may lead to an individual needing long-term disability benefits while out of work and recovering.
The study was recently published in the August 16 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. It demonstrates that some patients are unnecessarily receiving cardiac catheterizations.
In order to detect heart blockages, a small tube (catheter) is inserted into the heart from either the arm or groin. Doctors are then able to see if there are any heart blockages.
While some hospitals are almost always finding blockages in patients who undergo cardiac catheterization, other hospitals are rarely finding them. This disparity seems to be attributed to how carefully patients are selected for the procedure.
Those hospitals that tend to find blockages more often seemed to be more selective, performing the procedure on those considered to be at high risk. While the hospitals who rarely found heart blockages were performing the procedure on those who are at low risk.
Later this year the American College of Cardiology plans to issue criteria that'll help determine which patients should undergo cardiac catheterization.
