Special Precautions Should Be Taken to Protect Feet for Diabetics

Health Day reports that special precautions should be taken to protect feet for those who have diabetes, particularly pet owners. When you suffer from complications of diabetes and are unable to work for several months, then you may be able to receive long-term disability benefits.

One of the serious complications with diabetes is developing foot problems which include the following:

  • nerve damage (loss of feeling/sensation);
  • dry, cracked, peeling skin;
  • calluses (can turn into open sores);
  • ulcers (can lead to infection);
  • poor circulation; and
  • amputation.

Dogs and cats sometimes enjoy playing with an individual's feet but this can lead to severe consequences, which is why experts recommend keeping them covered while sleeping.

With just 2 known cases documented in a medical journal, the latest report involved a woman losing the lower part of her leg after her dog chewed on an infected toe while she was sleeping.

Experts say that pet owners need to be aware of the fact that pets sometimes lick wounds but this can turn into an infection or worse. With diabetes being the number one cause of amputations, special precautions need to be taken.

If you have questions concerning your eligibility for long-term disability benefits, it is best to seek legal help. A Palm Beach County long-term disability attorney can explain if you qualify.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.

When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S!
