Specialized Veteran Health Car Taught in 130 Medical Schools

According to the Yale Daily News, 130 medical schools across the nation, including the prestigious Yale School of Medicine, are offering new programs designed to train medical students in the field of veteran health care.

The new campaign is a part of the Joining Forces proposal lead by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Joe Biden’s wife. Students trained in the new veterans’ health programs are showing promise to help create a new generation of doctors and technicians capable of increasing the availability of health care that is focused on the needs of disabled veterans.

The curriculum offered in the veterans’ health programs focuses on the conditions that often result in disability for veterans. Injuries like head trauma, traumatic brain injury, and amputations are emphasized, while other courses focus on mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Joining Forces hopes that the new edge on training the next wave of medical professionals to be focused on the common conditions experienced by veterans will allow for the VA to expand its current medical services. This may lead to more VA medical facilities and specialists for veteran care, which may help more veterans to qualify for disability benefits.
