There are many Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits for which disabled veterans qualify. Some of them are much more well known and publicized than others, but all are important to veterans disability. One that is not very well known is the Specially Adapted House (SAH) program.
Southwest Florida is home to hundreds, if not thousands, of disabled soldiers who could benefit from the SAH program. For those who qualify, the VA provides up to $63,780 to be used to make disabled veterans' homes navigable and safe.
According to the National Center for Assisted Living, 59% of those living in assisted living end up in nursing homes. This will likely be the fate for many disabled veterans without the ability to make the necessary modifications to their homes, which will allow them to continue to live in their own homes without barriers.
"Aging-in-place" is something the VA supports for veterans of every conflict, ranging from WW II to Iraq and Afghanistan. This has become more of a concern with veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who have suffered injuries, such as losing limbs, that would likely have resulted in their death in previous wars.
The VA's preference certainly lies with helping disabled veterans live out their civilian lives in the "comfort and dignity of their private homes" as opposed to being forced to spend extended time in rehabilitation facilities.
