It is believed that the problem started when her husband died suddenly of a heart attack on October 1, 2008, and perhaps an SSA official simply entered the information incorrectly. However, it has taken Paladino at least 1 year to fix this problem and she has had to submit her birth certificate, marriage license, and other paperwork to prove that she is alive.
The SSA is working on fixing the problem, and officials have promised to find out how the error occurred. SSA officials have also said that they will contact the bank and cell phone company to let them know the woman is indeed alive.
