If you receive Social Security disability, you probably depend on your check arriving at a certain time and being a particular amount. Major changes could prevent you from paying your bills, and could even force you to go hungry until the issue is taken care of. Imagine how receiving a $1 disability payment would impact your life.
This is the terrible event that happened to a Florida woman recently. According to Firstcoastnews.com, a woman who had been receiving disability payments for about 30 years experienced her first major issue when she was shorted over $700.
She expected a deposit of $721 in her account. When she tried to access it, she found only a $1. There was no notice that her benefits had been rescinded, nor a notice that she had ever received an overpayment that had to be paid back. It appears that it was simply a mistake.
When the SSA was contacted, officials said to call Medicare, but there was nothing on their end that would cause the issue, either. It is currently being investigated by the SSA.
There is no explanation as of yet that could clarify the error. While mistakes do happen, it unfortunately hindered the victim financially for this month. The good news is that a local church has stepped in to provide her with some food while the case is resolved.
Considering how understaffed and overworked the SSA appears to be right now, events like this are bound to occur. Should it happen to you, contact a lawyer to find out what your rights are and how to get the issue taken care of immediately. There is nothing worse than expecting to be able to pay your bills and put food on the table as usual, only to inexplicably be let down by a government agency that you have depended on for years.
