SSA Executive Earns Medal for Improving Compassionate Allowances Program

In a report from Social Security Administration (SSA), an executive of SSA wins the 2011 Citizen Services Medal for overseeing the development of the Compassionate Allowances programs. If you were diagnosed with a severe medical condition, you could qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

Diane Braunstein, received the award as a result of the efforts put into the Compassionate Allowances program, which provides faster results in decisions being made for the most serious disabilities. This eliminates potential claimants from having to wait months or even years for a decision.

So far the program has helped approximately 100,000 individuals who have severe disabilities begin to receive their benefits within days, rather than months or years.

The program was first launched in 2008, with a total of 50 diseases and conditions qualifying. Since then there have been other additions, with 12 being recent.

Some of the conditions that may qualify for the Compassionate Allowances program include the following:

  • brain disorders;
  • certain cancers;
  • heart disease;
  • early-onset Alzheimer's; and
  • idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

If your medical condition is severe and falls under the Compassionate Allowances program, you could be eligible to receive a decision on your claim faster. For help with this or any other aspect of your claim, you may benefit from speaking with a Miami Beach Social Security disability lawyer.
