SSDI Payments and Past Debts

If you are like most people who collect Social Security Disability Insurance, you would have a tough time surviving without it. It is meant to replace some of the money you might make at a regular job if you could work. Unfortunately, many disabilities ensure that you cannot hold a typical job, if you can even get one to begin with.

Considering how hard it is for most people without injuries or lifelong conditions to find a job during a recession, SSDI could be the one thing keeping you from homelessness or bankruptcy. Imagine how you would fare if you suddenly lost most of your benefits because you found out you owed the government money.

Since Social Security is a government agency, be aware that if you owe any other federal or state agencies money, you could see smaller checks or even none at all.
Sadly, though the government agency to which you owe money likely knows that you are disabled and possibly barely getting by, they can still take your SSDI checks.

One example is owing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for a serious obligation like child support. Even if you can barely pay your bills and perhaps have plans to make smaller payments to the IRS to get the account cleared, sometimes you will not be spared. You might see some or all of your SSDI payments disappearing, leaving you with very little money.

If you are in such a situation, it is often best to contact the agency to which you owe money, if you haven't already done so. Ignoring the debt will not make it go away, and rather than simply damaging your credit score, such debts can have immediate financial ramifications. If the IRS or other relevant agency does not get back to you or is not willing to work with you, it is typically in your best interest to contact a lawyer that handles Social Security claims.

If you or your loved one are suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility. The process of securing Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone!
