SSI Benefits to Receive a 3.6% COLA Increase in 2012

According to a press release from Social Security Administration (SSA), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are expected to receive a 3.6% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increase in the year 2012. When you are no longer able to work, then Social Security disability benefits could be available.

Not since the year 2009, has there been a COLA increase; however, in January 2012, more than 60 million people in the U.S. can expect a 3.6% increase. Beneficiaries of SSI can begin to see increased payments earlier, on December 30, 2011.

At the same time there will be an increase in the maximum amount of earnings, due to the rise in average wages. These earnings are subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum). They will increase from $106,800 to $110,100.

It is estimated that in 2012, about 161 million people employed will pay Social Security taxes. Of them, approximately 10 million can expect to pay more taxes with the increase in the taxable maximum.
