If you currently receive Supplemental Security Income, it is likely your sole source of income. Many recipients find that they can barely survive on the average amount, which is why they are often grateful for other programs that help pay the bills. If you have already qualified for SSI, you are likely eligible for myriad money-saving programs, as well.
Some recipients of SSI cannot afford to install or pay monthly for a phone, which is why the Link-Up program can help. According to the Jacksonville Daily Progress, a program called Link-Up assists qualifying consumers in each state pay for a phone that is connected to CenturyLink telephone service.
The details vary depending on the state, but in many cases, the one-time fee to hook up the phone will be cut in half for eligible residents, which is up to a $30 value. Another program, called Lifeline, also offers monthly phone service discounts for those who qualify.
Many states have their own eligibility requirements; however, some states adhere to the federal rules for the program, which means that customers must also receive assistance from one of several specific programs. They include Medicaid, SSI, food stamps, Federal Public Housing Assistance, the Free Lunch Program, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, or the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Additionally, you may just be at or under about 135% of the national poverty level to qualify.
Clearly, if you already get SSI payments, you need to show proof of them in order to obtain the discount to get a phone. If you have applied for SSI and have not heard back about your application yet, you need to talk to your lawyer.
