The Orlando Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center recently coupled with the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida (HSNCF) and several other organizations to host a local Stand Down event. According to an article in
The Orlando Sentinel, veterans were offered a litany of services to help them either get back on their feet or to help make their lives more comfortable. Both
veterans with disabilities and veterans without injuries attended the event.
The
homeless veterans were offered services ranging from blankets to identification cards. Many veterans need computers to search for work, but cannot use public libraries without library cards. Library cards cannot be had without other types of identification.
Some veterans at the event were given help with obtaining state-issued identification cards, which should help them to help themselves.
The
Stand Down took place at the Orlando Downtown Recreation Complex. The point of the event is to bring together as many essential services as possible into one place. For many homeless veterans, transportation is a continuing issue, which is why the Stand Down is such a valuable event.
Among other services, the Stand Down offered at no cost: ·
haircuts; ·
sleeping bags; ·
clothes; ·
food; and
·
hygiene products. The event also made available representatives for alcohol and substance abuse programs for those veterans seeking help. Most of the homeless veterans "fall through the cracks" of the VA system, so events like the Stand Down serve a very important purpose.
