Statins Could Lower Liver Cancer Risk for Individuals with Hepatitis B

In a report from Health Day, statins could lower liver cancer risk for individuals with hepatitis B. If cancer has led to you being unable to work, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

Statins help lower cholesterol
but a new study finds that they may also benefit those with hepatitis B, a condition where the liver has become inflamed. Hepatitis B can lead to liver cancer. Previous studies have shown that statins may help with other types of cancer, such as breast cancer.

In this study, it was also discovered that the longer a patient with hepatitis B took statins, the greater the risk of developing liver cancer was reduced; however, researchers indicate that further studies need to be conducted before it can become a common form of treatment.

This is especially true since statins can also cause liver enzymes that climb to dangerous levels, resulting in liver damage. This would require that individuals taking statins be carefully monitored.
