When a
stroke causes an individual to become disabled and unable to work, they may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits as a means to augment the missed income.
The
Doctor's Lounge reports that
statins given to help reduce the chance of heart disease and ischemic stroke, may actually increase the risk of a second stroke in patients who have suffered one due to bleeding in the brain.
Researchers are looking into whether statins are actually beneficial to those who have suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. This may depend on the area of the brain where bleeding occurs.
Statins are also used to prevent a second stroke for patients whose initial stroke was due to a blood vessel clot. While it is beneficial for these types of patients, researchers indicate that those who have had a hemorrhagic stroke may want to rethink statins.
Additionally, they found that
those who had bleeding in the cerebrum most definitely should not be on statins.
Researchers indicate that the risk may not be worth taking the medication, but emphasize that it does depend on the area of the brain affected. Patients should discuss with their doctors whether or not statins should be taken.
This report can be found in the online Jan. 10 issue of the
Archives of Neurology.
