Stem Cell Therapy May Treat and Cure Kidney Disease

In a report from the Doctor's Lounge, stem cell therapy may help treat and potentially cure kidney disease. Kidney disease could lead to an individual suffering permanent disability and therefore, qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

The results of 2 new studies, which were published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, show how stem cell therapy may help repair kidney damage.

In one study, researchers were able to reprogram extracted kidney cells to behave like healthy cells. In the other study, researchers used kidney cells collected from urine to reprogram them.

What researchers plan to do next is to take these cell lines, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), and see if they can then be injected into individuals with kidney disease to develop healthy, functioning organs and tissue.

The potential here is to possibly cure some hereditary forms of kidney disease or those who suffer acute kidney injury in the future. This could hopefully eliminate the need for transplants and dialysis in those who have end-stage kidney disease.

While they may be a long way off, these initial results are providing hope.
