Although stem cell research is not without controversy, advancements in medicine continue to take place through it. Stem
cell research is already moving toward the possibility of finding cures for Parkinson's, Lou Gehrig's disease, cancer and other debilitating diseases.
New research has indicated that stem cells may also be able to help with hearing loss. Researchers may have found a way to harvest and grow tiny sensory hair cells that are essential to hearing. The idea is to implant these hair cells, either partially or fully, giving a patient the ability to hear.
Hearing loss can occur over a time if a person is exposed to loud noises continuously and repeatedly. Loud noises damage the tiny sensory cells within the inner ear. These cells help to transmit energy into electrical signals which travel to the brain.
If these hair cells are damaged, they cannot grow back and there is no treatment or surgery that can repair them. Hearing loss is not correctable.
Continued research will be done to determine if this new method will enable those with hearing loss to address or reverse the condition.
