March 17, 2011 - The military is offering free money to thousands of troops and yet cannot get them to step-up and take money that is rightfully theirs. The Department of Defense (DoD), the Pentagon, the White House, Congress, and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have all taken to multiple mediums to alert those veterans qualifying for stop-loss funds that the money is available. Their message has gone out on flyers, has been included in direct mail campaigns, has been tweeted, highlighted on Facebook, and the subject of a public service announcement given by President Obama.
Over 130 veteran service organizations were notified of the stop-loss pay being given to eligible soldiers. Announcements were broadcast over radio, television, and on various websites and blogs. For every month or part of a month military personnel were forced to stay deployed past their last contractually obligated day in the armed services, the DoD is paying $500. This is in addition to the pay they were already given while they were deployed. Military personnel eligible for the pay include:
The military used stop-loss between 2001 and 2009, and not surprisingly, it was very unpopular with just about everyone involved. This pay is being offered to those soldiers, and should not be met with skepticism or suspicion just because it comes from the government. Issued payments have averaged $3,800 and about 81,000 soldiers and veterans have claimed the money so far.
Congress gave the DoD $534 million to reimburse those service members who were held past their separation date after September 11, 2001, or stop-lossed. Of that money, only $300 million has been disbursed. The DoD was originally given the money in 2009 and was given a cut-off date for distribution of October. They cannot, however, give away enough of the money. The new deadline to claim stop loss payments is March 18, 2011. This is the 4th deadline extension.
