October 21, 2010 is the final deadline in which to apply for stop loss compensation from the military. The military has millions of dollars ready to give away to veterans for work they have already done. The only thing veterans need to do to claim the money. The deadline, however, is very quickly approaching. There is $315 million available in retroactive pay and there are tens of thousands of veterans eligible to make a claim against the funds. Over half of those eligible veterans, however, have not applied for their share.
Congress has set aside the money for veterans who were held past their separation date. More specifically, those soldiers held on a stop-loss order for service after September 11, 2001. The stop-loss order kept soldiers in the military past their scheduled separation date until replacements were available. Approximately 145,000 soldiers were held over.
The stop-loss payment will be about $500 per month or even a portion of a month that was served past the soldier's scheduled separation date. On average, soldiers held over will receive $3,800. There are still approximately 87,000 soldiers who have not applied for the money they earned, and if they don't apply by October 21, 2010, they will lose their eligibility.
If you are, or you know, a veteran held past their date after September 11, 2001 due to a stop-loss order, tell them their date to apply for their earned money is quickly approaching.
