“Stroke Belt” May Have Earned New Title of “Sepsis Belt”

According to a report from Health, the "stroke belt" may have now earned the new title of "sepsis belt." When you've suffered a stroke or any other serious medical condition that leads to you being unable to work, then Social Security disability benefits can help.

Those who live in the southeastern part of the United States-from Louisiana to Virginia-have earned the title "stroke belt," due to the high rates of strokes suffered in this part of our nation.

Now we have new research which indicates they may have earned an additional title, "sepsis belt," for having a higher risk of developing bacteria that affects the bloodstream.

Sepsis can be a fatal condition that is mainly acquired by infections such as bacterial pneumonia or meningitis. It can make an individual very sick and it could lead to devastating consequences such as organ failure or shock.

Every year in the U.S. approximately 750,000 individuals are hospitalized because of sepsis and about 200,000 die as a result.
While researchers are not sure why the cases are higher in the "stroke belt," they do plan on conducting research to consider factors such as air pollution, diet, and health behaviors.
